The ban on non-compostable plastic barrier bags for unpackaged wet proteins – dairy products, meat, poultry, fish and seafood – originally set for 1 September 2025 in South Australia will now commence on 1 September 2027.
Since the ban was announced, government consultation has been ongoing with feedback and evidence provided by multiple stakeholders regarding their experience with using certified compostable plastic barrier bags for unpackaged wet proteins. While certified compostable bags have been found to be suitable and food safe for a range of products, there have been challenges identifying reliable supplies of appropriate alternative bags for products with high fat and high moisture, in particular chicken and fish.
In response to this feedback, an extension of 24 months is being provided before the ban will come into effect. This additional time will allow businesses to test compostable bags to ensure their suitability and safety for unpackaged wet proteins, and to continue trialling different types of alternative bags.
There will be no changes to the ban on non-compostable barrier bags for unpackaged fruit, vegetables, nuts and confectionery which came into effect on 1 September 2024. Compostable barrier bags for these products are believed to be safe for use.
