The National Retail Association is hosting a free online session for small businesses and loss prevention specialists.
Attendees will get a break down of the latest criminology research, the state of retail crime across small businesses, and forecasted retail crime trends.
The event will showcase a deep dive into the recent 2022 Australia and New Zealand Retail Crime Study. The study covers 8,900 stores, representing a third of the industry, detailing COVID’s impact, theft types, and crime prevention strategies.
Key findings include:
- An average 0.88% sector loss ($4.3 billion) from July 2021 to June 2022.
- Customer theft (53%), employee theft (24%), and various frauds dominate losses.
- Violence against staff surged in some sectors.
- Police support increased to 51%, up from 20% in 2019.
There will also be an opportunity for attendees to ask our guest speakers questions. We encourage attendees to submit questions ahead of time.

Dominique Lamb has extensive experience in leading change in complex environments and has been involved in significant engagement in the Queensland sector as an advocate for retail, particularly during the COVID 19 pandemic and the economic recovery period. Dominique will share valuable insights into how retail businesses can work together to reinforce retail security.
Professor Michael Townsley, Griffith Criminology Institute

Professor Townsley is an experienced researcher specialising in the analysis and dissection of retail crime using advanced data science techniques, which enable him to design-out opportunities for future crimes. Professor Townsley is currently Director and Academic Lead of the Profit Protection Future Forum, the premier organisation for Loss Prevention professionals in Australia and New Zealand.
